Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Der Kurs beginnt am Montag, 2. Mai 2011.
Inhalt: In recent years, comics have been increasingly turned to as a medium to tell some of the most difficult and personal stories. This course will study the unique properties of graphic narratives, focusing on comics that address history (personal, national) and identity (individual, social). The course will draw from a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, including popular culture and visual culture studies, narrative theory, media studies, semiotics, auto¬bio-graphy studies, and literary history. The course will develop formal and theoretical strategies for reading the exciting and often deeply chal¬lenging work being done in the comics form today. We will be read¬ing several book-length graphic narratives, including Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, and Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, positioning this work in the context of a theo¬re¬ti¬cal and historical survey of the comics form.
