Inhalt: Within the brief time span of 1850-1855, writers like Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter, 1850; The House of the Seven Gables, 1851), Melville (Moby Dick, 1851), Thoreau (Walden, 1854) and Whitman (Leaves of Grass, 1855) published key works that have formed the canon of the American Renaissance. While these works remain important writings of their time, critics have recently exposed the gender and ethnic bias of this selection and added writers like Margaret Fuller, Emily Dickinson, and Frederick Douglass to the list of key 19th century authors. In this seminar, we will trace and analyze themes and motifs in the literature of Renaissance writers alongside political and social movements of the period. Reading exemplary works by the classic writers, we will also focus on texts by African American (Douglass, Brown), Native American (Ridge), and female authors (Dickinson, Fuller, Alcott). This seminar requires weekly reading and you will be expected to participate actively in group work activities and class discussions. The reading material will be provided in an e-reader at the beginning of the semester. Please read Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables (1851) before the start of the semester.
