This is the same lecture as 05.866.124- if you need to register for both 124 AND 125, PLEASE CHOOSE DIFFERENT LECTURES!

An inaugural event will be held on March 16, 2010, 6-8 p.m. in P1, with a discussion between Prof. Gerald Vizenor (University of New Mexico) and Prof. Deborah Madsen (University of Geneva).

Inhalt:
Perhaps more than any other ethnic groups, indigenous communities have persistently been confronted with mainstream myths about who they are. Even more disturbingly, these images have tended to replace, in the imagination of dominant cultures, the reality and contemporaneity of indigenous communities. The “noble savage” – as he is celebrated in innumerable Hollywood films – is hence said to have disappeared; those who claim to be native, on the other hand, are said to be mere vestiges of a civilization already extinct. Against such pernicious dismissals of the lived experience of native peoples, this lecture course explores the multi-facetedness of indigenous cultures today. More importantly, it attempts to establish a perspective of “Comparative Indigenous Studies,” linking discussions of an indigenous cultural production in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as Europe and Asia. What emerges from this comparative view is a vision of the way in which contemporary “post-indian warriors” (Vizenor) set out to beat the mainstream with its own weapons, inhabiting their own mythic images only to deconstruct them from within. The lecture course will bring together authors and critics whose work has been foundational for the field of indigenous studies as a whole.

An inaugural event will be held on March 16, 2010, with a discussion between Prof. Gerald Vizenor (University of New Mexico) and Prof. Deborah Madsen (University of Geneva).

Organization: Each lecture will be followed by a discussion session, which will further explore the issues addressed in the lecture. In this discussion session, “Scheine” for Cultural Studies can be obtained.
