Inhalt:
The Restoration (1660-1700) saw the reestablishment of monarchy and the reopening of the theatres in England. One of the characteristic genres of the period is Restoration Comedy or the Comedy of Manners. Its principal writers were William Wycherley, George Etherege, William Congreve and George Farquhar. The plays' predominant tone was witty, bawdy, cynical and amoral. The plots were complex and usually double, sometimes triple, featuring ingenious repartees and discussions of marital behaviour. The playwrights ultimately came under heavy attack for frivolity, blasphemy and immorality by Jeremy Collier and other critics.

We will study in depth:

William Wycherley, The Country Wife (1675)
George Etherege, The Man of Mode (1676)
William Congreve, The Way of the World (1700)
George Farquhar, The Recruiting Officer (1706)

A good edition is: Restoration Drama. An Anthology, ed. by David Womersley (Blackwell).
