Inhalt: A.S. Byatt (1936- ) is regarded by literary critics as one of the most sophisticated practitioners of contemporary British fiction. Her novels reflect a fruitful relationship between her scholarly interests in nineteenth century literature and the intellectual pursuits of the characters she delineates. Instead of exploiting feminist issues, she puts in place characters who confront existential challenges. Her novels abound with intertextual references. Also, they contain elements of pastiche and postmodernism. Genres like the detective novel, the fairy tale and the bildungsroman are foregrounded to highlight her ambitious achievement as a novelist. We will study these and other issues in: Possession. A Romance (1990) Babel Tower (1996) The Children's Book (2009). Our analyses will start with Byatt's short story "Sugar" (1995), which thematizes the chemistry of the writer's memory.
