Inhalt: The Novel of Development (or "Bildungsroman") is a literary genre of perennial fascination for both writers and readers. Tracing the protagonist's transition from youth into adulthood, it allows authors to explore fundamental questions about human identity, the self's relationship with others and society at large and the disillusionments that accompany the process of maturation. In this seminar, we will explore how and to what end authors across literary history have appropriated and adapted this genre.
Empfohlene Literatur: The following novels are obligatory reading for this course: Fanny Burney, Evelina or The History of a Young Woman's Entrance into the World (1778) Thomas Hardy, Jude the Obscure (1895) Virginia Woolf, Jacob's Room (1922) John McGahern, The Dark (1965) Angela Carter, The Magic Toyshop (1967) David Lodge, Out of the Shelter (1970)
