Inhalt: The Victorian Fin de Siècle covers roughly the last decade of the nineteenth century, a time of anticipation of and anxiety about the radical social and cultural changes that came to be fully realized in modernism. This period of transition fuelled a powerful literature which imaginatively translated the dark undercurrents of imperialism, sexuality, scientific and psychological discovery into fictions of the uncanny and the fantastic still haunting us today. In this Proseminar we will read and discuss a selection of tales leading us straight into 'the heart of darkness' of the age by featuring vampires (Dracula), ghosts (The Turn of the Screw) or mysterious doppelgänger (Jekyll and Hyde). All texts should be read BEFORE the beginning of class.
