Inhalt: This course will survey the history and present state of English in the Americas from Canada and U.S. American Englishes, to the many forms of English in the Caribbean. Cast in the framework of recent research on Postcolonial Englishes, its special focus will be on (re-)definitions of identity, the nativization of language structures, the emergence of new norms, the emergence and development of new and not-so-new (regional and ethnically-based) varieties such as African-American Vernacular English, Latino Englishes, and on Creolization and Decreolization processes within American Englishes.
