Inhalt:
Intellectual property law protects creations of the mind, including inventions, music, books, and much more. These protections impact our world in a myriad of ways. In sub-Saharan Africa, nearly 1.5 million people die each year from AIDS. Many of these people could have lived longer lives if only they had access to common anti-retroviral medications. Are pharmaceutical patents to blame? Record labels are suing college students for sharing music online, trying desperately to hold on to profits in the face of new technologies. Is it time to change copyright law? Can a Canadian vineyard paste a label on its worst bottle of wine, claiming it is from the Rhine Valley? Intellectual property laws are at the heart of all these issues.

Zusätzliche Informationen:
This course will provide an overview of the most common types of intellectual property: patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and the right of publicity. With regards to each type of intellectual property, we will explore the requirements for legal protection, policy rationales, and current controversies. The course will examine various national regimes as well as international protections. The course will be taught in English, and is ideal for students who have an interest in the law of music, literature, science, and marketing. Students are not required to take Legal English (course no. 16418) before taking Intellectual Property Law. However, Legal English will help prepare students for the topics covered in Intellectual Property Law. Students who need fundamental English language instruction should consider taking Legal English before Intellectual Property Law. Both courses will be offered in the winter and summer semesters. This course counts toward the Legal Faculty's English requirement.
