Inhalt: In this course we will study some of the most important women writers between the death of Elizabeth I in 1603 and the accession of Queen Anne in 1701. Most of the women were highly regarded in their own time, but were then written out of literary history until their rediscovery in the late twentieth century. We will study poets and dramatists of course, but we will also encounter some prose writing in genres that have become unfamiliar to us in the intervening centuries. We will be aware of the social, political and ideological context in which they were writing, but our primary concern will be the literature itself.
