Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
All students capable of following and participating in an English-language course are welcome. American Book History I is NOT a prerequisite to attending American Book History II!

Inhalt:
This course will focus on American book history from 1900 to 2010. We will begin by looking at the institutionalization/professionalization of the book market around the turn of the century (1900) with central institutions such as the American Booksellers Association, the American Publishers Association, the Association of American Publishers and the trade magazine Publishers Weekly. After that, we will trace relevant developments on the USA book market from the early 20th century to today, discussing the success of paperbacks, important publishing houses and their profiles, etc. Finally, we will analyze the structure of today’s American book market, especially in view of the concentration of the publishing industry and book market (e.g. the big bookstore chains such as Barnes & Noble and Borders), but also with an eye on the success of the e-book and similar devices in the USA (e.g. Amazon Kindle or Apple iPad).
