Inhalt:
In addition to communicating (factual) information, speakers and writers usually express what has come to called their ‘stance’. The concept of ‘stance’ covers the overt expression of an author’s or speaker’s attitudes, feelings, judgments, or commitment concerning the message associated with an utterance.
The seminar will cover the main areas of stance expression in English: While evidentiality and epistemics refer to the speaker’s expressed attitudes towards knowledge (towards its reliability or unreliability–certainly, perhaps), the mode of knowing or source (obviously, allegedly), and the adequacy of its linguistic expression (rightly), affect stance is involved when we express our feelings (fortunately) or when we comment on the manner of conveying the message (e.g. frankly, honestly). Finally, attitude expression is at stake when we make value judgments or assess our expectations (hopefully, importantly).
While the prototypical word class used to express stance may be the adverbial, a wide range of other means are also available: highly frequent comment clauses like I think, I guess, modal verbs, finite and non-finite clauses, word choice, paralinguistic devices (loudness, pitch, duration), and even non-linguistic devices such as body posture and gestures.
