Inhalt:
This seminar will use the topic dealt with in the lecture, in order to discuss and analyse the various ways in which British history is presented in books, TV programmes, films, the internet, podcasts etc. Students will select a topic from a wide range of possibilities, investigate how that topic (e.g. 1066, Queen Victoria, WWI, the Welfare State, class in Britain, or some of the ones mentioned below, etc.) is presented in print and on the screen, and then they will tell the others about the characteristics of the histories and media investigated. The books and DVDs of Simon Schama's A History of Britain 2000f will provide a frame from which students can choose their own focus. Another somewhat different frame is presented in David Dimbleby's The Seven Ages of Britain. The Story of Our Nation Told Through Its Greatest Treasures 2010, which has just been presented on Channel 4 and will be available to students in the library. Dimbleby reveals how history is told through art. Andrew Marr's books, A History of Modern Britain 2009, and The Making of Modern Britain. From Queen Victoria to VE Day 2010 can also be used and provide a frame for British history since 1945 (cf. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/6658705.stm).
Students may select a topic from one of the history books mentioned, but they are also invited to find other sources, esp. good ones on the web, for their own topic and for comparisons with the books listed. There is a cultural studies focus in this class, but students can also write term papers on the language used in the media as well as on problems of translation. Students can thus get either a kulturwiss. or sprach- / translationswiss. Schein.

From Queen Victoria to VE Day, Pan Books 2010 get hold of at least one text now, read it, and select a topic you want to investigate further.
