Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The reading test will be based on Marlowe, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus.
Inhalt: Against the background of the "Ringvorlesung", this class will deal with major Renaissance tragedies (Marlowe, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus; Webster, The Duchess of Malfi; Middleton, Women Beware Women; Ford, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore). Apart from the respective dramaturgical conceptualization of the plays, classical models as well as English sources and influences will be discussed. A special focus on the conventions of the "revenge tragedy" is intended.
