Inhalt: Was the Early Republic really as tasteless as Philip Freneau described it in 1788? Among others, our questions in this seminar will be: Why was there so little poetry in early colonial times and what were the literary models? How innovative was American poetry during the Revolution? What was the reading public's role in American poetry's coming of age? We will study poetry from the seventeenth century to 1850 (selected from Steven Gould Axelrod, Thomas Travisano, and Camille Roman, eds., Traditions and Revolutions, Beginnings to 1900 [New Brunswick: Rutgers UP, 2003], vol. 1 of The New Anthology of American Poetry). Participants are expected to write a seminar paper and to give an oral presentation. Since the paper will serve as the basis for a discussion in class, it will have to be written before or during the semester. For that reason, prospective participants are asked to register as soon as possible during office hours (Tuesday, 9-10) in room 01-585.
