Inhalt: Relationships between parents and children constitute one of the most basic and fundamental conditions of human life, but are also notoriously fraught. Idea(l)s of love, closeness and benevolent guidance are offset by underlying struggles for power and dominance. In addition, parent-child relationships have always been played out against a backdrop of changing conceptualisations of childhood, parenting and the family. This course examines portrayals of parents and children in a variety of literary texts across four centuries. It seeks to trace shifting perceptions of childhood and parenting and their reflections in literature, but also to examine to what extent these may point to shared concerns that remain constant over time.
