Inhalt:
Anger, love. fear, sadnessa world without emotions and feelings seems inconceivable, and language plays an important, though often neglected role in expressing and describing emotions and feelings. This class will bring (neuro-)psychological, anthropological, and linguistic insights to bear on our understanding of the ways emotions and feelings are communicated in English; verbally and non-verbally, by face, body, and gestures; literally and figuratively in myriads of emotion metaphors. Relationships that are foundational for humankind, such as those between cognition (feelings) and affect (emotions), biology and culture, nature and nurture will be encountered while we focus on the issue of communicating emotions and feelings via language and other modes of communication. Topics will include: the emotion lexicon, connotations, morphopragmatics (diminutives and augmentatives), expressive devices in the grammar of English, the vocal communication of emotion, interjections and the evolution of language, non-verbal expressions of emotion (face, gestures, body language, emoticons), the ontological development of emotion expression, emotion metaphors and idioms, why we curse, coolness and the reconstruction of emotional norms, persuasive language.
