Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Participants in the seminar are expected to prepare a (group) presentation in class on a recurrent topic from English framing it in one of the perspectives offered in Cognitive Linguistics; emphases may be on either the foreign language classroom or on a more theoretical point of view, critically reviewing the applicability of a theoretical strand of Cognitive Linguistics to a linguistic phenomenon.

Inhalt:
Cognitive Linguistics, an approach to the study of language that is informed by both linguistics and psychology, focuses on the interface of language and cognition. Such a cognitive commitment makes Cognitive Linguistics especially apt for contributing novel insights into issues of language acquisition--be it the acquisition of a native language or that of a second or foreign language.
In Second Language Acquisition, Cognitive Linguistics is especially concerned with the cognitive principles governing and the mechanisms involved in language processing, their time course of acquisition, their relevance to instruction, and, hence, their pedagogic applications.
This seminar, then, will start out with some general up-to-date coverage of Cognitive Linguistics research, followed by a discussion of selected domains of application in foreign language pedagogy: attention to language in Cognitive Linguistics and the Focus-on-Form paradigm in foreign language teaching; the grammar-as-construction view in Cognitive Linguistics and teaching construal in Cognitive Pedagogical Grammar etc. But we will also be concerned with the acquisition of gestures and their function in foreign language learning, or in what respects prototypes help acquire grammatical categories like noun and verb as well as those in phonology.
