Inhalt: This lecture course focuses on one of the most versatile, wide-ranging and productive literary forms: the novel. With its origins reaching back, arguably, to the fictional prose of the 16th century and before, novelistic writing has claimed a prominent role in literary history for centuries. Conversely, its demise or even ‘death’ has often been gloomily predicted. Nevertheless, to this day, the novel continues to thrive. This lecture course seeks to chart the development of the British novel from its first inceptions to the present day, examining its inflections with social, economic and cultural history. Rather than taking a narrowly chronological approach, however, we will also investigate shared thematic concerns that connect texts written at very different historical moments and thus shed light on the complex ways in which novels have contributed to and reflected perceptions of the self, the human condition, the nation and the world.
