Inhalt: This seminar explores the aesthetic, philosophical, and political dimensions of literary Modernism. Since Modernism was a movement that was not limited to one particular nation, but rather cosmopolitan in its outlook, and can thus be understood only in its transatlantic context, we will read texts from both sides of the Atlantic, even though a strong focus will be put on the American variety of Modernism. Texts include novels by Virginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, and Jean Toomer. We will also read a variety of Modernist poets and a number of theoretical texts which testify to the enduring legacy of Modernist Literature.
