Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Requirements: regular attendance, oral report, and term paper (Modulprüfung)
Inhalt: This seminar is designed to introduce B.A. and B.Ed. students to major writers of colonial literature such as John Smith, Anne Bradstreet, Thomas Shepard, Jonathan Edwards, Mary Rowlandson, Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and others. We will examine a wide selection of genres (captivity narratives, historiographies, travel narratives, autobiographies, sermons, poetry, etc.) and discuss general themes and literary motifs of colonial literature. We will start with the literature of exploration, then study written texts by Puritans and finally look at writings from the Enlightenment period.
