Inhalt: This lecture will provide a survey of American poetry from its beginnings in colonial America to recent experiments in Postmodernism. We will examine representative poems as well as the literary traditions and schools they belong to, and the cultural and political contexts in which they were written. Apart from well-known poets like Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor, Phillis Wheatley, Philip Freneau, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Stephen Crane, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Gwendolyn Brooks, Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, and Rita Dove, the lectures will present specimens of Native American poetry and a number of minor poets who nevertheless represent important developments in American Poetry. We suggest that participants use The Norton Anthology of American Literature (short or full versions of the sixth or seventh editions) for reference.
