Inhalt: As the title of Barbara Korte's study English Travel Writing from Pilgrimages to Postcolonial Explorations (Basingstoke, 2002) indicates, travel literature has an ancient and well-researched history. It is, basically, informed by an antagonism between factual description and individual introspection. We will analyse Laurence Sterne, Travels Through France and Italy (1768), Charles Dickens, American Notes and Pictures from Italy (1842/46), Jonathan Raban, Coasting (1987), and Bruce Chatwin, The Songlines (1987).
