Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: To participate in this course, students must have completed the "Zwischenprüfung."
Inhalt: War is an ever-present feature of human existence and as such also a pervasive literary topic. In this seminar we will study a selection of literary texts in which war provides not merely the background to character and plot, but also functions as a crucial narrative device driving their development. The structure of the course is diachronic, leading us from Chaucer to Pat Barker, from late medieval battles to the televised traumas of contemporary Afghanistan.
Empfohlene Literatur: Students are required to purchase and read editions of the following texts (no e-texts, no Wordsworth or Reclam editions!):William Shakespeare, Henry VRebecca West, The Return of the SoldierGeorge Orwell, Coming Up for AirPat Barker, Double VisionAdditional readings materials will be made available by late March (information via Jogustine).
