Inhalt: What factors influence the choice between grammatical variants such as the following? a lighted candle vs. a lit candle prouder vs. more proud the thesis of the book vs. the book's thesis to work oneself to the top vs. to work one's way to the top These and related questions form the central issues explored in this course. Actual language data confronts us with a wide variety of choices. The decision as to which variant to use is not made randomly. It turns out to be systematically constrained by factors from all levels of linguistic analysis, such as phonological influences, frequency, semantic and pragmatic aspects (including iconicity, grammaticalization and typological tendencies), processing complexity and horror aequi (i.e. the avoidance of identity effects). The currently thriving discipline of grammatical variation will additionally be shown to have important repercussions for linguistic theory-building.
