Inhalt: The transition between the Victorian novel and the modern novel will be analyzed in this class, and the focus will be on both the conceptual and the formal changes of the genre. The first text to be discussed will be Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, with a special focus on the engendering of a woman's history by a male writer. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness will provide for a shift of focus towards colonial/postcolonial issues in the English novel, and Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse will be scrutinized as a text which challenges both thematically as well as narrotologically the male perspective.
Empfohlene Literatur: Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D'Urbervilles (Penguin); Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness (Reclam); Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse (Penguin) The texts will be available at the University Bookstore.
