Inhalt: According to a contemporary critic, to be for Mrs Thatcher implied being against the arts. Mrs Thatcher's idea of an "arts industry" subjected to the laws of the market, her lack of respect for the achievements of the subsidized theatres, and her narrow-minded middle-class attitude towards the arts in general provoked plays which scathingly explored the shortcomings of the Tory government. This class will review both the political as well as the aesthetic achievement of the playwrights who opposed Mrs Thatcher.
