Inhalt: This seminar is devoted to the literary and the intellectual history of the 18th century. Its subjects are empiricism (Locke), moral philosophical idealism (Shaftesbury, Addison), neo-classicism (Pope), forms of the novel (Defoe, Swift, Fielding, Richardson), the poetry of James Thomson and Thomas Gray, Dr. Johnson and the oriental tale, Burke and the rise of gothicism.
