Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: To enrol in this course, students have to have completed the "Zwischenprüfung."
Inhalt: Although a resilient critical myth has it that the novel "began" in 1719 with the publication of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, novelistic prose was written well before this watershed. After a general introduction to the novel, its history and theory, we will study a selection of early prose texts that can be seen to mark the emergence of a new genre and elucidate their formal, thematic and stylistic similarities and differences.
Empfohlene Literatur: Students are required to purchase editions of the following texts (e-texts will not do!): Thomas Nashe, The Unfortunate Traveller (1594) (Penguin edition of collected works) John Bunyan, The Pilgrim's Progress (1678-83) (Penguin edition) Aphra Behn, Oronooko (1688) (Penguin edition of collected works or Norton) Daniel Defoe, Moll Flanders (1722) (Penguin edition) Additional reading materials will be made available towards the end of the semester break.
