Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: To enrol in this course, students have to have completed the "Zwischenprüfung." Course requirements: Regular attendance, active participation, presentation (+ handout), term paper on a topic previously approved by me.
Inhalt: Fin-de-siècle fiction is usually associated with a sense of despair about the loss of past certainties and an uneasy anticipation of further radical changes. This resulted in thematic and stylistic decadence on the one hand and a heightened awareness of the need for social change - expressed in an unflinching, indeed sometimes ruthless naturalism - on the other.
Empfohlene Literatur: The following novels, which students are required to read before the semester, will be at the centre of our discussion of the fin-de-siècle aesthetics and mentality: George Gissing, The Odd Women (1893) (Oxford or Penguin edition) Thomas Hardy, Jude the Obscure (1895) (Oxford, Penguin or Norton edition) Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897) (Oxford, Penguin or Norton edition) Additional materials (short stories and non-fiction), a preliminary course outline and a list of presentation topics will be made available before the beginning of the semester via Jogustine.
