Inhalt: PS African American Autobiographies Dejin Xu (Peking University) and Alfred Hornung Forms of life writing have been important means of ethnic self-expression in American literature and culture. In this course, we will trace the evolution of African American autobiographies from slavery to freedom, enabling cultural and political self-realization. The texts will include slave narratives, the imitation of the classical "Christian" model, the conventional and experimental portrayals of female emancipation and the transnational success story of the first African American president. Articles of autobiographical scholarship will complement the reading and will be available on ReaderPlus.
