Inhalt: The comic mode in drama is surely as old as the theatre itself and comedies have made up a decisive part of English literature for centuries. It could even be claimed that the comic mode seemed to have suited English dramatists particularly well as a large number of the greatest and funniest comedies in world literature have been written in English. In this Proseminar we will undertake to survey the entire history of English comedy from the Elizabethan age to the present. As with all survey classes (Proseminar I) this involves extensive reading even if we stick only to a limited number of examples. The plays discussed are William Shakespeare's As You Like It, William Wycherley's The Country Wife, John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, and Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. To round off the programme, examples of 20th century comedy and short glances at neighbouring genres such as the farce or stand-up comedy will be included.
