Inhalt: This course surveys literary theories & schools of interpretation and offers introductory instruction in the means, methods, and possibilities which such theories provide for scholarly research. Schools and theoretical perspectives covered in the course include but are not limited to the New Criticism, Marxism, Psychoanalysis, Structuralism and Semiology, Poststructuralism, Deconstruction, Queer theory, Postmodernism and Cultural Studies. Some of the theorists and critics under consideration include; Adorno, Althusser, Barthes, de Beauvoir, Brooks, Derrida, Freud, Foucault, Jakobson, Jameson, Lacan, Marx and Zizek. Emphasis will fall heavily upon developing good research habits. Students will be encouraged to use some form of citation management program and to consider their use of sources to be relevant to their academic careers far beyond the purposes of any single class or paper. Expect the requires to include an annotated bibliography of theoretical research in the field of American literature and culture, an assessment of a prominent journal in the field, and a short presentation on one of a number of texts selected by the instructor.
