Inhalt: History looms large in contemporary literature and culture. Recent novels by prolific British writers explore the impact of historical events on individuals, societies, nations and cultures, as well as their interactions with (personal and collective) memory. This course intends to map out the theoretical perspectives from which history and memory are being studied – from the postmodern proclamation of the ‘end of history’ to the awareness of new geopolitical and ideological constellations post-9/11. Treating history and memory as interrelated processes that are fundamental to individual and group identity – and whose production is central to writing –, the course will examine a selection of novels which interrogate these concepts in connection with issues such as trauma, violence and guilt.
