Inhalt:
Culture Studies I / American Studies is intended as an introductory survey course in American cultural and intellectual history from the early sixteenth to the late nineteenth century. Addressing beginners in American Studies, this class will introduce students to major cultural, social, and political developments from the beginning of the European explorations of the New World to the end of the nineteenth century. Reading a selection of primary texts, students will examine and explore key themes and debates from three centuries of American cultural history. Topics for discussion range from early European conceptualizations of America and the Puritan beginnings of New England to nineteenth-century controversies over westward expansion, the abolition of slavery, the role of women in American society, and the various reform movements during the antebellum period.

Primary documents are taken from: Bernd Engler and Oliver Scheiding, eds., Key Concepts in American Cultural History (Trier, 2007). The textbook for the historical background is Paul S. Boyer et al., Enduring Vision: A History of the American People (New York, 2007).
