Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Familiarity with all our texts is a precondition to gain credits for this seminar. Active participation is a necessity. Final day to submit the seminar paper: 1 March 2017.
Inhalt: The telling of stories seems to be a basic trait of human beings. If it is really “hard-wired into humans”, as Hoeg suggests, is up to debate. However, humans have always told each other stories – from cave drawings to WhatsApp messages and, of course, in a plethora of works of literature. In this seminar, we will analyse the workings of different forms and modes of writing. We will look at a variety of types of literature comparing different modes but also trying to find major continuities. And we will further pay attention to the specific form, i.e. language used in the texts and its effect on the reader. As texts are never isolated artefacts, we will also consider the context and historical conditions that may have influenced forms and modes of narration.
Empfohlene Literatur: In preparation for this seminar, please read the following texts in advance: • Shakespeare: Othello (Arden Shakespeare) • Charlotte Brontë: Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics) • Joseph Conrad: Heart of Darkness (Oxford World’s Classic) All other texts will be made available at the beginning of the semester. Please purchase the editions as suggested in order to avoid a time-consuming search for pages in the seminar.
