Inhalt:
Hello and welcome to proseminar/seminar “Joyce’s Ulysses”! This class will serve as an introduction to Joyce’s masterpiece, which many consider the most important work of modernism, maybe even “the greatest 20th century novel written in English” (The Modern Library).

Our goal we will not be to read the novel in its entirety. Instead we will concentrate on a number of key episodes in order to get familiar with Joyce’s technique, his style and his themes and motifs. While thus only touching upon a very small number of topics, with this selective approach we will avoid the danger of getting lost in Joyce’s textual labyrinth.

After finishing this class you won’t have read, let alone understood, Ulysses completely. But you will have learned how to read the rest of it alone and you will (hopefully) be able to appreciate what the book has to offer.

Empfohlene Literatur:
The required text is the 1922 text of Joyce’s Ulysses. Therefore please purchase the Oxford edition, edited by Jeri Johnson. See link below:

It is absolutely vital that we use the same text (there are several different ones), so do not buy any other than this edition! Amazon has a number of copies, however, I would suggest you support your local bookshop, which can order it for you in no time as well. Also, please be aware that Kindle, iPad, or any other electronic editions are not allowed in this class; buy the paperback instead.

Zusätzliche Informationen:
You don’t have to read the novel in advance. But since this is quite a difficult text, you may want to get some preparatory information in advance. You can access the following links from the campus net or from home via VPN connection to the campus net.
