Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Most people do not readily associate British fiction with the avantgarde and stylistic provocation: the realist tradition is much more dominant in readers’ minds. But British literary history is also rich in eccentricity and experimentation. In this course, we will discuss four prominent examples of experimental narrative: Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy (1759-67), William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790), Virginia Woolf’s The Waves (1931) and Alan Moore’s Voice of the Fire (1996). We will approach these works in terms of their style – the ways they negotiate narrative conventions and tradition, and attempt to channel readers’ expectations and emotions. But we will also consider these experimental fictions in their historical and cultural contexts, as discursive fictions that tap into contemporary artistic, cultural, and narrative theory and ideology.

Empfohlene Literatur: Please buy the Oxford World’s Classics editions of Tristram Shandy and The Waves. The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is included in the Norton Anthology of English Literature. I will also make a PDF version of the text available on the reader. Voice of the Fire is available in a relatively inexpensive paperback edition.
