Inhalt:
Typically, we treat the Gothic and Romanticism as though they were two separate entities - especially Anglophone critics often opt for this neat separation. Yet there is more than historical congruence that makes it worthwhile to think of the two phenomena as two sides of the same coin: both can be considered a counter-reaction to the Enlightenment; both share many basic philosophical concepts and tenets (most prominently the Sublime and the concept of the Imagination) as well as narrative strategies; both cover many of the same themes and topics. It is possible, in other words, to speak of a Gothic Romanticism, and vice-versa, of a Romantic Gothic. In this course, we will cover some key works from both movements: Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", Lord Byron's dramatic poem Manfred, and - as a small final excursion into the English-speaking world outside the UK - Poe's "The Raven". We will establish (or for some of you revise) the basic characteristic traits of both phenomena, and tackle these works from both perspectives, hopefully shedding new light on both and enriching our understanding of the era.

Empfohlene Literatur:
Please buy the Oxford University Press editions of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto. All of the poems will be made available for photocopying in a course folder available from Frau Wächter's office. I will drop you a Jogustine message as soon as the course folder is available.
