Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: London.Story.Worlds will provide a framework for discussing the multiplicity of stories of London. Starting with Doreen Massey’s concept of ‘stories-so-far’, we will investigate the various trajectories that stories take through the ‘long 20th century’, paying particular attention to London as a site of colonial and postcolonial negotiations. Beginning with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sign of Four and selected Sherlock Holmes’ short stories, we will detect and analyse traces of Empire in the late 19th century as present in these tales, before traversing modernism and the impact of WWII with Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway, a novel of a day in London. Sam Selvon’s The Lonely Londoners will then be analysed for the way it configures the Windrush Generation, in particular, and the perspectives of Empire in mid-20th century London, before finally turning to Zadie Smith’s NW as a multi-voiced story of contemporary London. Our emphasis will shift between the two terms of the seminar’s title—story and worlds—drawing on narratological frameworks, on the one hand, and impulses from postcolonial studies, queer studies, and cultural geography, on the other.
