Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

  • This course in the German Department is for students whose A language (native language) is English. If you are studying English as a foreign language, please choose a course in the English Department.
  • The course will be taught in a blended-learning format, which means that classroom sessions in some weeks will be combined with e-learning activities in others.
  • In addition to Jogustine, please join the course in ILIAS. Registration will be open from 20 October at the latest.
  • Assessment will be on a pass/fail basis.
  • In winter 2016/17, this revision course will be offered in TK1 instead of an English–German translation course. You will need to attend it if you want to complete your MA in four semesters.

Inhalt:
This course is part of a joint project between the German and English Departments. The project will involve translating and revising two issues of factory: Magazin für nachhaltiges Wirtschaften. Native speakers of German (and possibly other languages) in Don Kiraly’s course will translate the texts from German into English and do the terminology work; native speakers of English in Susanne Hagemann’s course will revise the translations. Another group of Don Kiraly’s students will be responsible for the project management.

Revising project translations will involve 1) correcting minor errors directly, and 2) adding comments on more complex errors or problematic passages. The original translators will be responsible for applying the corrections suggested to them by their various revisers. Since the revision course will be taught by a native speaker of German, it will be the participants’ responsibility to decide what needs to be corrected and how.

During the first weeks of the semester, we will use sample texts to discuss the principles of revision. The first batch of project texts from Don Kiraly’s group should be ready to revise around Week 6, and the second batch, towards the end of the semester. We will have a classroom session during the first revision stage, so that you can discuss any difficulties arising with the other participants. We will also review the work done on the first batch of texts to see whether any adjustments need to be made in our working procedures for the second batch.

Empfohlene Literatur:

  • You may want to have a look at the factory website prior to the beginning of the course: http://www.factory-magazin.de/
  • If you are interested in revising and editing, I can recommend the following book (which, however, is not mandatory): Mossop, Brian (2001). Revising and Editing for Translators. Translation Practices Explained 3. Manchester: St. Jerome.
