Inhalt: This seminar looks at Australian indigeneity as negotiated in written texts. These texts encompass life-writing, novels, and essays, as well as historical documents. By focussing on West Australian indigeneity in particular, the issue of the ‘Stolen Generations’ will emerge as a central concern. Readings from the fields of ficto-criticism and critical whiteness studies will help us to develop a greater understanding for the vocabulary and sensitivities that discussions of (ethnic) identity require. Further readings from the debates regarding Colin Johnson / Mudrooroo’s racial identity will help us to understand the stakes of West Australian negotiations of Aboriginality. Historical documents, policies and statements will also form a significant part of the extra readings. Students will be required to read the three texts listed below, actively participate in discussion, prepare (some of the extra) readings as part of a presentation in class, submit two short pieces of writing (short(!) position paper & abstract), as well as write a term paper (approx 4,000-4,500 words) in order to obtain credit for this seminar.
