Inhalt: Fin-de-siècle fiction is usually associated with a sense of despair about the loss of past certainties and an uneasy anticipation of further radical changes. In late 19th-century British fiction, these feelings led to thematic and stylistic decadence on the one hand, and a heightened awareness of the need for social change - expressed in an unflinching, indeed sometimes ruthless naturalism - on the other. Although the aim of this seminar is to provide students with a general understanding of the ethics and aesthetics of British fin-de-siècle culture, the focus of analysis will be on naturalistic responses to this context.
Empfohlene Literatur: The following novels, which students are required to read before the semester, will be at the centre of our discussion of the fin-de-siècle aesthetics and mentality: George Gissing, The Odd Women (1893) (Oxford or Penguin edition) Thomas Hardy, Jude the Obscure (1895) (Oxford, Penguin or Norton edition) Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897) (Oxford, Penguin or Norton edition) Additional materials (short stories and non-fiction), a preliminary course outline and a list of presentation topics will be made available before the beginning of the semester via Jogustine.
Zusätzliche Informationen: Course requirements: Regular attendance, active participation, presentation (+ handout) and/or tasks for "Aktive Teilnahme", term paper on a topic previously approved by me. Please consult your "Modulhandbuch" for details.
