Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Requirements for receiving credit are regular attendance, completion of *all* reading assignments, informed contributions to class discussions and assignments / worksheets, a brief oral presentation, and a term paper.
Inhalt: Looking at how language usage relates to and affects identity, this course will focus on a selection of representative varieties of American English and on the consequences of their usage (e.g. language attitudes, ethnic variations, bilingual education, etc.) The course thus spotlights sociolinguistic issues in the U.S.
Empfohlene Literatur: Course readings will be provided in a course pack available in a copy shop at the beginning of the semester. Further texts will be posted online in the Reader.
