Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Hip Hop culture, with rap music as its most visible component has transcended its status as an underground youth culture informing the mainstream and has since become the mainstream. By examining the musical works of both early and contemporary artists as well as their music videos and marketing strategies, this class aims at an academic contextualization of rap music as a uniquely American contribution to music, deeply rooted in preceding African American music cultures. This exploration of Hip Hop culture will include a discussion of thematic fields such as African American identity, gender, the cultural significance of sampling and remixing, and many more.
