Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Preliminary Discussion / Introduction: All questions relating to organization will be answered in the first session of the seminar. Procedure and Requirements: Your papers should average 15 pages of text plus outline and bibliography, and should be written in English. The papers must be submitted, at the latest, on August 17, 2017. For the form of your paper, please check “A Guide to Writing Term Papers” on our home page (Fächer/Englisch/Amerikanistik/Materialien) and the most recent edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (see Lehrbuchsammlung). Your handout should be 1-2 pages summarizing the most important points of your oral report. Your oral report should average 20 minutes and should be given in English.
Inhalt: In this seminar, we will read, interpret, and contextualize two 'classics' of the American novel of initiation, J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye (1951) and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), as well as two short stories, Ernest Hemingway's "Indian Camp" (1925) and William Faulkner's "That Evening Sun" (1928), which demonstrate the characteristics and potential of this genre. We will also study selected movies focusing on the experience of adolescence. Special emphasis will be placed on the development of the genre in American literary history, the imaginative reconstruction of a child's or adolescent's limited perspective, and the authors' (and directors') critique of American society.
Empfohlene Literatur: Compulsory Readings (Primary Literature): Please purchase copies of J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye (1951) and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (1960). Any (unabridged) paperback edition will do (approximate costs: 15 euros; see, e.g., amazon.de). Do not purchase Kindle editions. The stories by Ernest Hemingway ("Indian Camp", 1925) and William Faulkner ("That Evening Sun", 1928) will be made available in the seminar. The first novel (The Catcher in the Rye) should be read before the first day of class.
