Inhalt: The aim of this graduate seminar is to explore what I have chosen to call "the art" of Renaissance theatre - that is, the dramatic architecture, thematic patterning and emotional/psychological strategies of plays written during the late 16th and early 17th century. Structured by the keywords “Perspective”, “Information” and “Self-Reflexion”, this course will consider aspects such as dramatic orchestration, “Sympathielenkung”, double and multiple plots, dramatic irony, and metatheatrical elemets in a broad selection of plays from the period in question.
Empfohlene Literatur: All students are requested to purchase the following plays, all of which are available in good modern editions, and ideally read them before the semester: William Shakespeare: Othello John Middleton: The Revenger’s Tragedy Francis Beaumont: The Knight of the Burning Pestle Additional materials and a preliminary course outline will be made available as master copies by the end of March (notification via Jogustine/JGu Reader).
