Inhalt: This survey class introduces participants to American poetry from colonial times to the 21st century. We will read a wide array of poetic works from the colonial period to the 21st century and from a variety of authors, among whom Bradstreet, Wheatley, Whitman, Dickinson, Hughes, Ginsberg, Alexie only figure as a few prominent examples. In our readings, we will explore how conceptions of what poetry does and how it works have changed over the centuries and how it has related to specific social/cultural periods. Aside from getting to know different poetic movements, participants will also study the basics of poetic artisanry (rhyme, metre, rhythm, figures of speech, forms). As any other seminar, this class is reading-intensive, based on your close readings of texts, and based on discussion. Participants will familiarize themselves with the necessary critical vocabulary and learn how to talk about this most intimate literary genre in academic contexts. Participants will practice cultural literacy, the technique of close readings, critical/comparative analysis, text-based argumentation and independent research.
Empfohlene Literatur: Information on reading material to follow soon; additional readings will be provided via ILIAS.
