Inhalt: This course provides a survey of the major genres of colonial American literature. Students will engage such diverse bodies of texts as travel reports by early explorers, historical accounts of the first British settlements in North America, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century personal narratives and poetry, as well as early American drama. The focus in this seminar will be on the formal and aesthetic features of these diverse genres. Furthermore, students will explore how these texts respond to the specific historical circumstances in which they were written.
Empfohlene Literatur: Most texts relevant for this class are included in Volume A of the Norton Anthology of American Literature. A reader with additional primary and secondary texts will be made available on ILIAS at the beginning of the semester.
