Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- This course is aimed at BA and MA students, including exchange students, who study English and have a mother tongue other than German. You are also welcome if you do not study English but can read, write and speak it very well (C1 level).
- Exchange students attending the German intensive course (D2/D3) are welcome provided that their English is substantially better than their German.
- You need to have a grasp of the basics of translation if you wish to attend the course. It is not suitable for beginners with no prior knowledge of translation.
- In addition to Jogustine, please join the course in ILIAS (FB 06 – Deutsch – Vernetzte Projekte – WiSe 17/18 – Relais-Übersetzen von Märchen – Hagemann, "Translation between English and various A languages"). ILIAS registration will be open from 10 October at the latest.
- The course can be attended
(a) on its own,
(b) as part of the German Department's project module,
(c) or as part of a new module, "Translatorische Kompetenz: Querverbindungen". Module descriptions for the BA and the MA are available online. Please note that this is a module of the German Department; you cannot use it instead of one of the English Department's modules (but you can register for it if you do not study English).
- To earn credit points for the course, you need to attend it regularly and participate actively. Regular attendance means that you should miss no more than two sessions, and that you should be in the classroom on time. Active participation involves submitting coursework (such as translation drafts prepared at home) on time, presenting your translation drafts in class, taking part in class discussions, and communicating professionally about any problems arising. At the end of the semester, you will write a short self-assessment describing and evaluating what you have learned in the course.

General information
Many FTSK students, as well as exchange students, have an excellent knowledge of both German and English. However, FTSK's financial and staff resources do not allow us to offer translation courses between English and each of our students' numerous A languages. Instead of focussing on a single language pair, therefore, in this multilingual course students with various A languages will work together on their translations from and into English. One of the advantages of this multilingual approach is that it encourages students to think about the translation process (i.e. what they are doing and why) instead of concentrating exclusively on the final product (i.e. the target text). Becoming more aware of the translation process is often a good way of improving the quality of your translations.
What you will not get in this course is a teacher correcting your translations for you.
What you will get is
- an in-depth discussion of the translation process, i.e. of the various steps which are necessary to ensure a functional translation – including, for example, source-text analysis, the development of translation strategies, ways of identifying and describing translation problems as well as possible solutions, and translation-related research
- a knowledge of strategies for quality assurance which you can apply both to your own and to other students' translations
- an opportunity to take responsibility for your own translations both in and outside the classroom
- in the case of translations into English, an opportunity for discussing how to ensure a functional translation into a B language
- scope for reflecting on, and experimenting with, the role of translators
- practice in speaking, reading, and writing English
Winter semester 2017/18
This semester, we will take part in the German Department's fairy-tale project. This is a multilingual project that involves relay translations (= indirect translations), i.e. translations based on other translations rather than the "original" source text. For example, a text could first be translated from Romanian into English and then from English into German. All texts translated will be fairy tales.
In the first half of the semester, you will translate fairy tales from your various A languages into English. Your translations will subsequently be translated into German by students from another project course. Your translations should be intelligible but they will not need to be completely error-free, since their only purpose will be to serve as relay texts.
For the second half of the semester, you can choose between translating another fairy tale from your A language into English and translating an English-language fairy tale into your A language.
Part of the purpose of the fairy-tale project is to document the linguistic and cultural diversity of FTSK. We are therefore very much interested in translations from languages other than the faculty's "official" A languages, i.e. languages such as Bulgarian, Catalan, Korean, Kurdish, or Ukrainian.
You can choose your own source texts. Ideally, you should use fairy tales that have not yet been translated and that are no longer protected by copyright. However, if this proves to be difficult, we can also consider producing retranslations or translating copyrighted texts.

There is no required reading for this course. However, if you are not familiar with functional approaches to translation, you might want to have a look at a textbook such as
- Kadric, Mira, Klaus Kaindl, and Michèle Cooke (52012). Translatorische Methodik. Basiswissen Translation. Wien: facultas.wuv [2005].
Several copies of this book are available in FTSK's library.

Exchange students can attend this course if they fulfil the following criteria:
- At least C1 level in English
- Prior knowledge of translation
Assessment will generally be on a pass/fail basis, but exchange students who require a grade for their home university will be given one. Please provide written confirmation from your exchange coordinator that a grade is necessary.

Info für Studierende im Modul „Projekt“:
Wenn Sie diese Lehrveranstaltung im Modul „Projekt“ belegen möchten, achten Sie bitte darauf, dass alle drei Lehrveranstaltungen dieses Wahlpflichtmoduls innerhalb eines Semesters abgeschlossen werden müssen. Melden Sie sich zum Wahlpflichtmodul „Projekt 2“ nur an, wenn Sie das Wahlpflichtmodul „Projekt 1“ bereits abgeschlossen haben.
Dieses Projekt wird gemeinsam mit unserer Partnerhochschule, der Staatlichen Linguistischen Universität Moskau, durchgeführt. Das Ziel des Projekts ist es, die vielen Sprachen, die am FTSK vorhanden sind, aber nicht studiert werden können, sichtbar zu machen. Die deutschen Übersetzungen werden anschließend von deutschen Muttersprachlern korrigiert und an die Partnerhochschule gesendet. Dort wird anschließend eine Übersetzung aus dem Deutschen ins Russische angefertigt. Es handelt sich also um eine Relais-Übersetzung. Anschließend soll eine dreisprachige Märchenausgabe publiziert werden.
